Like the beginning of the episode 1, have restarted my journey of this beautifully-filmed, award-winning drama and thinking of Yoon Bok and the paintings, it is one of the highlights of the year of 2008.
"the so-called ' Painting ', the thoughts of ' missing '".
In 1766, a prominent court painter (Kim Hong Do's mentor) is killed after being secretly commissioned by the King Yeong Jo (King Jeong Jo's grand father) to paint a portrait of the crown Prince Sado (after, was executed by King Yeong Jo by misunderstandings), and there is nowhere to find the portrait anymore. And then the court painter's fellow painter Young Seo Jing (also a friend of Kim Hong Do) and his wife also end of dead, and their daughter Young Yoon Bok goes missing after that. Kim Hong Do begins investigating all of these.

Young Yoon Bok's cross-dressing painter as her adopted father's wishes, as at that time, only man is able to be a painter. And Young Yoon Bok actually forget about her parent, since she is just a little girl and tried to get away from the memory of murder.
Ten years later, a younger named Shin Yoon Bok enters the Dohwaseo (the Royal Bureau of Painting), and Kim Hong Do come back to Dohwaseo as per King Jeong Jo's requested. This brilliant painter discovers a fiery talent in Shin Yoon Bok, and takes Shin Yoon Bok as his student, King also becomes aware of Yoon Bok's talent and requests that Kim Hong Do and Shin Yoon Bok serve him together by painting the realities of the common people. From the history and drama, we can find Kim Hong Do is good at depicted real scenes from the Korean landscape while Shin Yoon Bok subjected to mature content with a touch of erotic .
King then orders the two to find the portrait of the crown Prince Sado. Untangling history and dangerous secrets, his stepmother, Queen Mother Jeongsun (King Yeong Jo’s Queen con sore) with ambition to win the power, and in fact, they were political enemies. And this drama is laying out their relationship dramatically.
Painter of the Wind starts deviating from history a bit, as official history that Queen Jeongsun was not as the one in "the Painter of the Wind" ( wiki Queen Jeongsun ), and Shin Yoon Bok was a man, but the script writer enhance the tense by approaching the thinking of "why Shin Yoon Bok has to be pretended that she is a man?", which is an interesting stance to take. Considering how interesting that a woman painter has to live and work with an all-male Dohwaseo. Like the Hua Mulan, both take the job bcos of father's sake, and both are legendary from folklore. |

The fictional historical novel "The Painter of the Wind" by Jung-myeong Kee.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Late Choson The late Choson period (from the 17th century AD) was a period of relative prosperity in Korea. The arts thrived, particularly under King Yongjo (1724-76) and King Chongjo (1776-1800), both able rulers who encouraged economic, social and political stability.Chin'gyong, or 'true-view' landscape paintings became fashionable among the scholar- Kim Hong-do was one of the most famous painters of these scenes. This album is one of at least two known copies of Hong-do's famous original, now in the National Museum of Korea. It may have been made in the late nineteenth century as a special present for a dignitary. The painting focuses on people and their activities, with the background barely illustrated. The paintings in the album include schoolroom scenes, wrestling, and other everyday activities. Boyish-er and boyish-er…
Moon Geun-young departs further from her usual cute image in her cross-dressing role for the upcoming drama The Painter of Wind.
(In case you’d like a refresher, here she is looking girlish and sweet, and kinda actually a little like Lindsay Lohan.)
The current drama landscape: An overview
The Painter of Wind (SBS)
On the other hand, The Painter of Wind shows off an entirely different artistic sensibility in its delicacy. While Kingdom of the Wind is dark, Painter is picturesque, and finds itself in its details — the close shots of the moving paintbrush, the lingering look in a character’s eyes. It also boasts a lovely background score and a director who uses it to its best effect.
I wouldn’t be too quick to call Moon Geun-young revelatory in her performance as a woman masquerading as a man in order to receive art training — not yet — but I think we can expect good things from her as this series progresses. Like Yoon Eun-hye before her, she is almost too pretty to pass off as male, but actually does a credible job with mannerisms, line delivery, and deepened voice (especially considering how much more high-pitched her normal speaking voice is).
The thing that sets The Painter of Wind apart from most sageuks is that it doesn’t (appear to) have a political focus. While the court and politics are featured, the main plot of Painter isn’t dictated by power (comma, the acquisition of). It’s a character and relationship study.
Based on the first two episodes, it looks like the series is going to start off lighthearted — Episode 1 was surprisingly upbeat and funnier than I’d expected. I am guessing the series will progress into more emotionally fraught territory as we delve into these characters. Park Shin-yang lays out the development of the relationship that will flower between master and student in the opening voiceover, saying, “She was my student… my teacher… my friend… and my beloved.”
Verdict: Same deal as Kingdom. I plan to watch, but won’t be recapping. But if you feel up to the task, I’d be happy to give someone else a stab at it.
